Greensboro, N.C. – When you look at a Teaching Assistant’s job description, you will see tasks like supporting teacher instruction, maintaining the classroom and helping with clerical tasks. What you would not see is stepping up to find the answer to the ever-growing food insecurity problem that many of our families experience on a daily basis.

When Claire Smith saw the demand for an answer to this problem, she did not falter; instead she immediately got to work. Making use of an open space at Alamance Elementary, Smith decided to start a food pantry to help support her community.

Colleague Jessica Fine wrote, “During the recent government shutdown, Mrs. Smith went above and beyond to care for our students and their families. Recognizing that many families were facing unexpected financial hardships, she took the initiative to organize a temporary food pantry at our school. Using her own planning periods, lunch breaks, and even time after school, Mrs. Smith coordinated food donations, organized storage and distribution, and ensured that every student in need had access to meals to take home. She personally reached out to staff, families, and community partners to make sure the shelves stayed stocked and no child went hungry. This act of compassion reflects the very best of what it means to be in education — someone who not only teaches, but also uplifts and protects their students beyond the classroom. Mrs. Smith’s leadership, empathy, and tireless dedication have made a real difference in our school community during a difficult time.”

This dedication to the students at Alamance Elementary earned Smith the title of Employee of the Month for December. A classroom full of students greeted her with cheers, hand-made cards and smiles.

Smith received a $50 gift card courtesy of the Greensboro Jaycees. During the month of December, her photo will be displayed at the district’s central offices, at Alamance Elementary and in the Greensboro Jaycees office.
